Staebl® Product Sample

A different way to experience the materials we choose. Stæbl Knoll® Stair Edging & Trims Limited Edition Sample Collection

Saved from the Skip

What we throw away says something about what we value?

Every day, valuable construction materials end up in rubbish skips. Some have reached the end of their useful life, while others could be recovered, remade, and returned to use rather than ending up in landfill.

What if we recognised their value before they became waste? This question inspired us to create something a little unexpected..

A familiar object.

Waste Remade®

A different experience.

When considering how to present our Knoll® Stair Edging & Trims to architects and specifiers, we wanted the samples to express more than the products themselves. We wanted to share the thinking behind their materials, the care invested in their design and our responsibility for the buildings we create.

So we recreated a familiar construction rubbish skip in miniature and filled it with Knoll® profiles manufactured from 100% recycled aluminium sourced from post-consumer and industrial material streams.

When you reach into the Skip and remove a sample, you symbolically recover something valuable that might otherwise have been discarded. The aluminium has already been recovered and remanufactured. But the experience reminds us that materials don't necessarily lose their value when their original purpose ends.

We call it Saved from the Skip.

An invitation to consider how today's decisions can influence what happens to materials tomorrow.

Environmental, Social & Governance

Materials deserve more than one life.

Aluminium's strength, durability and ability to be recycled repeatedly make it well suited to long-term use in the built environment. Our Knoll® Stair Edging & Trims give recovered aluminium another useful purpose in buildings where accessibility and safety matter. This thinking connects three important parts of Staebl’s work.

Waste Remade® recognises the value of recovered materials and returns them to useful applications.

Design Loop® considers the entire product lifecycle, from material selection and manufacture through installation, maintenance and eventual recovery.

Custodian® extends our responsibility beyond installation, supporting ongoing care, performance and end-of-life recovery.

Together, these systems reflect our commitment to keeping valuable materials circulating rather than accepting disposal as their inevitable destination.

What we make, we want back.

The environmental story is only one part of why these products exist. A stair edging has a practical purpose. It defines the edge of a step, supports visual recognition, and contributes to safer movement through the built environment. For people living with blindness or low vision, the relationship between the stair surface and its edging can be particularly important.

Clearly distinguishable stair edges help people recognise level changes and move with greater confidence. We have therefore created two contrasting presentations of our Knoll® samples.

The green Skip contains darker profiles for consideration against lighter stair surfaces, while the black Skip presents silver profiles for darker surfaces. Both let architects and specifiers examine the material, appreciate its geometry, and consider how the finish might contribute to the visual contrast required for an accessible stairway. These are practical decisions with human consequences.

Our samples provide a starting point for understanding these relationships, supported by Staebl's technical information and independently measured luminance reflectance values. The final contrast of Knoll must be assessed against the actual adjoining stair surface and applicable accessibility requirements.

Good design considers the people who will use a building, including those whose experiences and needs may be different from our own. Sometimes that consideration is as simple as making the edge of a step easier to recognise.
